This special ring got its name from its owner Claire Chalk. She was the wife of the renowned New York entrepreneur Oscar Roy Chalk. It is reported that Mr Chalk bought this ring from Harry Winston as a gift for his wife. A famous fable about this gem is that Mrs Chalk wore this stunning emerald ring for a state dinner at the White House, in honor of Queen Elizabeth II. However when she noticed that the Queen’s ring was a less attractive as compared to her, she turned her ring around on her finger, so as not to upstage the queen.

Later in the year 1972, the Chalk couple donated this fabulous emerald ring to the Museum. A closer look at the emerald studded in this ring tells us that the centre stone is a 37.82-carat, square emerald-cut, deep bluish-green emerald of Colombian origin, with a good transparency. Though very exquisite but like all natural emeralds this gem also contains some inclusions.

As for the history of this emerald, it was previously the centerpiece of an emerald and diamond necklace that belonged to the most flamboyant Maharani of Baroda, Maharani Sita Devi, an Indian royalty who was called the "Wallis Simpson of India". She had to sell off some of her elaborate collection of jewelry when she faced financial difficulties. It is said that Harry Winston was an American jeweler purchased the necklace and he re-cut the emerald before setting it in a platinum ring. In the process emerald was reduced from its original 38.40 carats to 37.82 carats. This beautiful ring had the emerald surrounded by 60 pear-shaped colorless diamonds, with a total weight of 15 carats. As these green gems look fabulous with diamonds or white sapphires as these off set its beauty, so the surrounding colorless diamonds in the ring further enhanced the beauty of the emerald, and made it a masterpiece in jewelry setting, that would forever remain a living monument to the designing skills of Harry Winston who is known as the "King of Diamonds".
